HobbyTown USA has just re-launched their Hobby Outlook publication. But now it’s an e-magazine, free to view online. In the August 2010 issue of Hobby Outlook, a few things it discusses are ROAR Nationals, RC tips and tricks, airbrush technique, and the HPI dealer demo program. Looks pretty cool the way that it’s animated when you click to go to the next page (which is made to look as if you are reading a printed magazine with the crease down the middle and all). Future issues may not be RC heavy (they’re planning a trains issue for Spring 2010) but it’s always about fun hobbies and I’m guessing there will be a little RC something each time. If you haven’t signed up to receive HobbyTown’s newsletter you can do so at the HobbyTown site. From the front page you can access the Hobby Outlook magazine as well as get info on Android and iPhone store locator apps. Just look over in the right side column. So if you’re out and about and suddenly need some replacement parts you can whip out your phone and find the closest HobbyTown store (there’s a store locator inside the e-mag too).

This is more robot than remote control — although it includes a remote control unit for parental intervention — but it’s too cool not to mention. Sure, you can put your kid in a wagon and use an RC vehicle to haul ‘em around (thusly) but this contraption puts the travel under toddler control. Let’s Go Buy a Sub

Here in Austin,TX where I live it doesn’t get cold for too long — maybe 3-4 months out of the year. Even then, 32-60 degree days are few and far between. Heading to the pool for some RC submarine diving can be almost a year-round activity (warm days are good because you may have to get in the water if your sub sinks).

Give an RC a Little Pick-Me-Up

Sure, YouTube has some funny videos. But you can learn things too, even from the non-tutorial videos. Here’s someone who added servo driven hydraulics to one of his RCs. This is a cool idea if you want to do a little extra to your ride. I think that putting a little more thought into the design and some fine-tuning this could be used for more than just show. Like on-the-fly adjustment of ride height of a rock crawler, perhaps. Maybe for off-road use adjusting ride height to make those landings from high jumps a little less rough on the chassis when hitting the ground. I have had my share of plane crashes. Some were funny and some weren’t. RC planes can be a lot of fun once you get the crashes out of the way. Hey, look at it this way we all have to start somewhere. Nitro for New Hobby?

This blog from a Tyler, Texas Hobby Town store describes the various offerings, included RC vehicles. But I find the idea that fuel-powered RCs are good for the person looking for a new hobby a bit questionable. I advocate getting into the RC hobby with electrics first before stepping into the nitro world. Sure there are probably exceptions but I’d encourage anyone looking at radio controlled vehicles as a new hobby — cars, trucks, planes, helicopters, or boats — to start with an electric RC. Do you agree or have another take on it?

Not the most elegant ramp for jumping RCs but it’ll work in a pinch.

My son hobbled together some bricks and boards in the backyard for this ramp. You might want to build something a bit more stable for your own backyard track.
