Catching the Wave… the Air Hogs Vectron Wave

February 28, 2010 by bpadmin · Comments Off

To be precise, toys that use infrared technology aren’t really RC since they aren’t radio control. But in most other ways they are like radio controlled toys. However, the Air Hogs Vectron Wave moves even further away from RC with their infrared UFO. That’s because there is no transmitter, infrared or otherwise. Once you get past the sort of “wow, that’s kind of cool” use of infrared sensing technology though, you’re left with a toy that really doesn’t do all that much. I normally like Air Hogs toys, but this one just isn’t all that great where it really counts – the fun factor after day one. Check out my review of the Air Hogs Vectron Wave IR UFO. And if you disagree or have a different perspective on this toy, submit your own review.

RC Vehicles Word of the Day: Torque

February 28, 2010 by bpadmin · Comments Off
Filed under: General

You hear the word torque tossed around a lot when talking about RCs.  Torque helps an RC go faster. It can also help an RC spin and slide out of control. Too much torque can cause tires to go flying off or cause plastic parts to break. It’s not the same as power, but then again it is, sort of. Mechanically and scientifically speaking torque is a “rotational or twisting force… that causes things to turn or rotate.” In an RC car or truck, torque is what gets the RC moving — gets the wheels turning.

RC Vehicles Word of the Day: Differential

February 26, 2010 by bpadmin · Comments Off
Filed under: General

You know how in some track and field events runners don’t line up in a straight line next to each other? Instead they are staggered with the person on the outside lane appearing to get quite a head start on those running on inside lanes. The reason is that the track is actually longer on the outside lane so if everyone started together but had to stay in their own lanes, the runners on the outside are at a disadvantage and would have to run faster just to stay even. The staggered start evens out the lane length. In a way it’s kind of like a differential on an RC. When going around a curve, the wheels on the outside of the curve have to travel further. The differential causes them to spin at a different speed than the wheels on the inside of the curve so the whole RC finishes the turn more smoothly and all at the same time.  Not every RC has a differential. Some use other methods. But for those that have ‘em, they come in variations of the open, adjustable, and ball types.
